Speaking Center Events
What’s In the Works
Agnes Scott is a busy campus, and the Speaking Center is right in the middle of the action. Organizations all across campus invite a variety of well known speakers and new voices to come spread their messages on campus. From the mainstream divas to the ever controversial speakers, we invite them all. Copies of Agnes Scott’s official cultural program are available at the main desk in Alston. Speakers sponsored by other groups are added all the time. The best way to find out about those is to read the fliers around campus.
For the Speaking Center, the year kicks off with the Center for Writing and Speaking’s Opening Gala, which is best known for its abundance of really excellent cakes. Each semester we hold several workshops (from dealing with speech anxiety to presenting at SpARC) which are open to the entire campus community. We also give in class presentations at the request of professors from all disciplines. Every year, we hold two big speech contests where members of the Agnes Scott student body get a chance to showcase their speaking skills.
Classroom Visits
The Speaking Center welcomes opportunities to visit your classroom and speak on a variety of topics relating to public speaking. Short presentations to your class provide an overview of the Center and services offered. Longer classroom visits include tips on effective communication, organizing an oral presentation, addressing a specific audience, and methods to enhance delivery skills.
