Becoming a Speaking Center Tutor

The Speaking Center at Agnes Scott College offers students, staff, and faculty a collaborative learning environment for improving critical thinking and articulating ideas. Speaking Center tutors, from diverse disciplines, assist others in developing these important competencies. Each year in the spring, the Speaking Center hires studentsrising sophomores, juniors, and seniorsto be tutors. The application process is competitive, but following the suggestions below will help ensure that your application is strong.
Before you apply
Before you apply to become a Speaking Center tutor, take a few minutes and consider the responsibilities and your commitment.
- Work 10 hours per week tutoring, attending meeting, visiting classes, conducting workshops.
- Attend all Speaking Center appointments.
- Attend scheduled events and workshops.
- Attend orientation and workshops prior to the beginning of classes for fall and spring terms.
- Maintain precise records of your Speaking Center activities.
- Enjoy working in a collaborative environment with an emphasis on helping others.
Suggestions for becoming a Speaking Center tutor
While the following suggestions do not guarantee your acceptance as a Speaking Center tutor, they will enhance your application.
- Receive tutoring in the speaking center, attend speaking center workshops and events.
- Take advantage of as many speaking opportunities and speaking contexts as you can.
- Maintain a record of academic excellence.
Application Process
The application process for the next academic year begins in February with flyers, announcements, and information on the Speaking Center website. Candidates selected as tutors will be announced during mid-April. Applications for the 2008-2009 academic year are due March 7th, 2008. Please submit the following to Dr. David Lawrence, Speaking Center Director in Presser G-16.
- A letter expressing your interest and qualifications for the tutor position.
- An interview with Dr. Lawrence and the Speaking Center staff.
- Evidence you have significant public speaking experience, either through the Public Speaking class, or other forms.
- A brief oral presentation in the Speaking Center.
- Names of two faculty members who can recommend you.
