The Speaking Center, part of the Center for Writing and Speaking, provides assistance and facilities for Agnes Scott students, faculty, staff and administrators who are faced with the challenges of preparing oral presentations for particular audiences.
Speaking Center tutors, trained in preparing oral presentations, work collaboratively with students in all stages of the public speaking process. This process includes brainstorming ideas, finding evidence, developing arguments, organizing the speech, seeking language appropriate for the audience, and delivering the presentation. Additionally, tutors offer guidance on the effective use of presentation software and visual aids.
The Speaking Center believes Agnes Scott women are passionate about their ideas, passionate about real-world problems, and passionate about seeking discursive solutions to those problems. To this end, one of our primary goals at the Speaking Center is to work with students in developing their "voice" — to speak passionately, to speak ethically, and to speak out.
What is the Speaking Center?
- We provide peer tutoring for formal and informal presentations, advice for participating in classroom discussions, and help with speech anxiety
- We provide 24 hour access to audio and visual equipment (for practicing presentations), a video camera (for taping presentations) and a speaking library
- We lead workshops throughout the semester on topics such as dealing with speech anxiety, turning a paper into a presentation, using visual aids, and effective speaking style.
- We visit classes to give general advice on speaking or specific advice for your assignments
- We offer students an outlet for speaking activities like speech contests and debates
